Tahir Chatur, M.A.
Tahir Chatur is a Clinical Psychology PhD Extern at The Child & Family Institute. Tahir practices an integrated approach to therapy. Experienced in both Cognitive-Behavioral as well as Psychodynamic approaches, he is trained in modalities including Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Interpersonal Psychotherapy.
Tahir has been a practicing clinician since 2019 and a registered psychologist in Alberta, Canada, since 2023. He has worked in community outpatient settings as well as addiction and trauma inpatient treatment centers. While studying in New York, he continues to maintain a virtual private practice in Canada.
Beyond the types of theory in a therapist’s toolkit, Tahir believes the most important element of change for a patient comes from the trusting and vulnerable relationship created in the therapy room. Through a structured and detailed intake process, Tahir will tailor a treatment approach that is most appropriate to your needs. He works with patients navigating identity, belonging, relationships, and life pressures. His style is relational, reflective, and insight-oriented while also incorporating practical tools for regulating emotions and restructuring thought patterns. As someone raised between the cultures of Kenya, India, and Canada, Tahir integrates evidence-based approaches from cognitive therapy to dynamic treatment from eastern and western frameworks, with curiosity about the stories that create our complex lives.
Tahir emphasizes therapy as an opportunity to discover how you relate to others, how others understand you, and where to explore your authentic self. Tahir practices what he preaches, and you can often find him performing as a comedian and creator, from the stage to TikTok to TV screens. Working at the intersection of creative expression and trauma therapy, Tahir is pursuing doctoral research on the impacts of comedy in group therapy.
Practicing since 2019, Tahir is a registered psychologist who has worked in trauma treatment, supporting adjustment issues, identity development, intergenerational pressures, and interpersonal therapy. You may be coming to therapy feeling anxious, burned out, emotionally overwhelmed, or stuck in unrealized relationship patterns. Others may come in because there is a sense of disconnection between their world and themselves.
Psychotherapy is more than reducing “symptoms.” Together, through regular sessions, therapy can explore the patterns, relationships, and emotional roles that shaped how you move through the world today.
Tahir is a student member of the American Psychological Association and the Canadian Psychological Association, as well as a licensed member of the College of Alberta Psychologists.
In Spring 2026, Tahir produced and performed The Third Choice, debuting at the New York Fringe Festival. A show blending cultural storytelling and therapy, Tahir received the extension award to feature at the Gotham Storytelling Festival in New York City.
Tahir has arrived in New York for further training and clinical education, pursuing a PhD to extend his passion for providing informed and integrated care. He holds an MA in Forensic Psychology from the City University of New York (2019), is currently pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology at Long Island University, and is a Registered Psychologist licensed in Alberta, Canada.
